Student Service Program

CHRISTIAN SERVICE  PROGRAM FOR GRADES 6th – 8th

The primary objective is to provide a person-to-person volunteer service to people in need. As Christians, Christ calls us to serve those in need. This is an important aspect of our faith journey as Catholics. OLHR students are encouraged to use their time and talents to serve their school and parish, as well as the larger community, as follows:

• Helping teachers during Recess, Lunch, Afterschool (with administrative approval and parent permission)
• Parish Fiesta – students may help out at the booths- students must sign up to work (maximum of 4 hours)
• Parish Rectory and Religious Education Program
• Church ministries, including altar serving and lector opportunities

Students are encouraged to track and submit a record of their hours -- as well as a reflection based on the service -- every trimester. Although the Service Program is incorporated into students' learning and requirements, the goal is that OLHR Crusaders recognize the value of their time and talents, and that they can use both to benefit others, grow in humility, and foster the development of their character and knowledge of the communities around them.

 ACCEPTABLE SERVICE

• After school – homework and tutoring (Monday- Thursday) ... Students must sign up one week prior to service- 8th has priority
• Parish Fiesta – students must sign up (max. 4 hrs) Clean-up, working in booths. Students must sign up prior to the fiesta
• Parish office and – You must check with the Parish Office before and ask when you can do hours (max of 5 hours total)
• Religious Education Program (students must sign up with Ms. Esparza and must complete a VIRTUS Permission slip)
• MEND Poverty (Pacoima) – students must be accompanied by a parent and fill out application. Call (818) 896-0246 for details

UNACCEPTABLE SERVICE

• Work for a profit institution
• Child care
• Cleaning a teacher’s classroom

Students must submit their service hours log each trimester, along with a one-page TYPED reflection describing their service, learning, and the impact of their work. Due dates are as follows:

• 1st Trimester: November 6-9
• 2nd Trimester: Februry 20-23
• 3rd Trimester: May 20-24
